35 degrees, not much wind.
2 hunters, plus our 6 year old guide.
Just after throwing the deke's out, we had a group of 5 work in like they
are supposed to. TW's gun was difficult to get loaded in the haste of the moment so only 1 bird was dropped in that group. Right after, had a single come straight in. Later in the morning had another single come in high and dropped him. Saw more birds than we have seen all year in this hole. Large groups also. But, as in real estate, location, location, location. We were 125 yards to far left. Final count, 2 gads, 1 greenhead, and 1 good time!

2 hunters, 3 hrs.
1 mallard 2 greenwing teal
Got new ducks in the area. Drake grunts mix with soft hen quacks and a jerk string work well. Dont call much and they will drop in ur spread. Would have had more, just a lil rusty on the shooting.

3 dads, 3 kids, and 3 geese down.
Sometimes it isn't the bag number that is important. I think the look on
these 3 little faces says it all. Of course, the look on the 3 big faces
taking these pictures was probably just as excited if not more.

Saw very few birds and only had a hand full even start to work. Weather really had them sitting still. TAKE YOUR KIDS HUNTING! If you don't have children, I'm sure you have friends that do. Keep the sport alive.

There are good numbers of gadwalls in the area, but they are older and wiser. Recent rains have added some water to many areas, and probably increased duck movement somewhat. But reports of great success are very very spotty.

35 and little wind
4 guns
we had mallards and gads all over the area we were hunting, but they just didn't like our spot. A lot of water hurt us tremendously and the ducks just got up circled their hole and went back to the flooded timber. same on both sides of the hole we hunted. We did have large #'s of geese, managed to knock down 3 but that was it for the morning. We decided to pick up a little before 10 am and as usual a group of 6 geese did everything but land. they worked hot to the call but we had picked up the dekes and they just wouldn't commit. try again this weekend

Waterfowl & Crappie Guide Steve McCadams writes: "Ducks moved better today than they have in three weeks thanks to a drastic weather change that delivered heavy rains, brisk northwest winds and rain that turned to sleet and snow by afternoon. Temps were dropping throughout the day (Tuesday) and large numbers of ducks were taking to the skies here on the Tennessee River. We bagged limits of mallards today and viewed big flocks of gadwall, mallards, and pintails coming from the south. Area refuge units and state units here and to the west have been holding good numbers of ducks but an extended spell of mild weather has not stimulated much movement until today's change. All across west Tennessee ducks were on the move today as several blinds reported increased activity in the Obion and Forked Deer River drainage and in the northwest corner around Dyersburg and Reelfoot. Waterfowlers have 12 days left in the Tennessee season, which expires on January 29th along with several other Mississippi flyway southern states.

27 degress with light wind
there are definitely new birds back into to area. we had gads on the water at first light and mallards that moved all morning. I think the lay off affected our shooting, because it was sad. had a group of six that almost landed and only dropped two and some other birds that I'm too embarrassed to mention. total for the morning was 4, should have been 10 but that's hunting
2 greenheads and 2 drake gads

Had the weather, but very few ducks wanting to work. We saw maybe 300 ducks and about 40 geese moving toward the refuge in the early morning... that was about it. A few divers were on the water, but not moving our way. Thanks to my friend Tim Pitchford for the use of his blind. We managed to bag one drake gadwall so we saved the skunk. It was my friend's son first ever duck so it was a great day. Good luck for the rest of the season, but after today it seems we are about done.

Hunted sand bar below Hwy 60 bridge. Canoe covered in burlap. Woke up around 75 geese that never returned. Had 6 semi-long shots at mallards until sun came out and shut the slow show down. TWRA agent reports 4,000 ducks on island and 12,000 to 15,000 cranes.

2 Hunters, 9 hours
12 Ducks (11 Gadwall and 1 Mallard)
The weather was just what the doctor ordered. Strong northerly wind, spitting snow and cloud cover. This made for a good day of hunting if you lucked out and found the spot they wanted. We lucked out. It was a long day but we had groups of 2 and 3 work us every hour or two.

Hamilton County, TN River
Jan. 5

41 degrees and partly cloudy with 10 mph NE wind. Really a nice morning to be out. Not a soul around. Nice and peaceful. Saw about 3 groups of 10 or so flying high and definitely not heading my way. Had a group of 4 circle me twice, and thought better of it. Last group came in @ 9:00am, as I was about to leave with another big 0, and I managed to kill one Drake Mallard out of the bunch. All in all, it was good to hunt somewhere different.

North Alabama
2006

In general duck hunting has been slow. There are real good numbers of gadwalls on the TN River, but they're not moving much due to mild weather. A few folks who find a good spot to "get under'em" are killing some gadwalls. However mallards are a rarity and in general the Raccoon Creek Wildlife Management Area has been bad! Yesterday morning ( a holiday for most folks) during a "parking lot scouting" expedition, there was a grand total on one hunter in the entire area. That speaks volumes.

New Year's Day

4 guns, mild weather
I'm not really sure where the birds have gone, we had three gads come in early and they didn't leave. that was it except for a few passing birds that didn't look. Maybe I should have braved the storm and gone the next morning to the "hot spot". something about lightning and lugging a piece of metal over my shoulder just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. half our group of the day before went anyway and killed 8 (1 greenhead and rest were gads). That makes our first half total 71 ducks and 4 geese.

North Georgia
Dec. 26th

light wind 38 degrees
4 guns and overcast
After shooting 3 limits Christmas eve morning in about 20 minutes it was a complete turn around on the 26th. We didn't have any birds on the water when we arrived and very few to look at us come sun up. I think the amount of rain during the holiday has flooded some low areas and spaced the birds about. just a theory. In all, a gads and drake woodie.

Did find the pic of last Sundays geese. Pray for cold weather.

Christmas

Duck hunting in Roane County, TN through Christmas was pretty good. We
shot three, our twelve year olds did most of the shooting. My brother and
his friends shot a dozen all weekend. Geese were everywhere and there were
enough ducks to keep us late every day we went. May go some this week. The birds are flying up here.

Christmas Eve

2 Hunters 0 Ducks 2.5 hours
Saw about 7 ducks all morning until we packed it in around 9:30. Heard some woodie shooting going on early in the swamps. Saw 4 Birds work another group and I think they got 3 of them. Should have stayed in bed once again. I did however bag some Mistletoe on the way back to the car. I will use it wisely for the next few days until we get some new ducks.

Christmas Eve

2 Hunters, 2 hours
1 Duck (Gadwall)
Well I can say we shot every bird we saw. That's right folks. Only saw one Gad and he committed suicide over our spread. Never saw another bird anywhere and never heard them this morning. Some guys down in Raccoon had some good shooting but not sure what. We are between birds so all you diehard ducks hunters spend some time with friends and family during this holiday season. Merry Christmas to all and be safe.

Christmas Eve

3 guns, 26 degrees, not much if any wind.
FANTASTIC! It was difficult to control the excited laughter as birds began
to pour out of the sky into the deeks just before legal shooting. 25
minutes into the hunt we had hot barrells and strained necks. Christmas
Eve morning brought with it blessings of a limit of ducks in the bag, and
trusted friends in the blind. You couldn't ask Santa for more.

3 mallard drakes, 3 hens, and the remainder all gadwall.

5 guns, 42 ducks
Headed out on our annual Reelfoot Lake trip this year and saw more ducks for mid-December than can remember. Reelfoot had a lot of action due to Arkansas struggling with dry fields. Saw thousands of ducks each day but had zero wind. Pitched dozens of groups but had a hard time getting them to finish with the lack of wind. Shot 17, 11, and 14 on the three day trip - all mallards and mostly greenheads. If we'd have had 10 mph out of the N, we would have killed double that. Saw bunches of little ducks too (bufflehead, ruddy ducks, ringnecks, etc). Would recommend a Reelfoot trip to anyone this year if they can find time to get up there.

3 guns, 36 degrees
Where have all the ducks gone? We had maybe 2 or 3 groups of mallards Sunday morning, but nothing looked us over. We did have a group of honkers come from behind as we were heading out, but I managed to turn them and they caught the goose shells and silhouettes and that's all it took. All 10 birds locked wings with feet down, they were no more than 15 yards when we opened up. Dropped 4 which is pretty sad, I almost cut my finger pulling on a "auto" that the shell didn't engage on the second round. That's the way it goes.

3 Hunters 4 hours
1 Wood Duck
Definitely should have stayed in bed this morning. Clear, calm and Blue
bird Skies. The weather channel's current conditions listed Mostly Cloudy and 40 degrees. However it was clear and I had ice on my boat even though the temp gauge said 37. Saw a quarter of the ducks we saw yesterday and heard two groups shooting before shooting time. One group was shooting at least 10 minutes early. It was all over by 8 a.m.

Lost one Greenhead and One Woodie. Lots of action from the Wood Ducks but
they were higher than last week and taking routes over the trees and out of range. They are wising up. Slowing down from 2 weeks ago.

Two woodies in 5 minutes again in my hole here by the house. No other ducks to be seen. The duck numbers are impressive out in West TN, well above last year at this time and well above 10 year average.

3 hunters, 5 hours, one duck (sort of)
Slow, slow, slow... even the wood ducks that were plentiful seem to be moving out. Only had one pair of mallards work all morning. Greenhead stayed high, hen didn't... but she went down crippled long way off near another set-up. Hopefully they retrieved her. Otherwise one pass shot at a bunch of woodies and that was it. As one fellow put it, "looks like we're between ducks." Wait until the weather is so foul you don't want to go, and that'll be the time to go.

3 guns, cold with light wind
Saturday proved to be somewhat of a puzzle. We saw less than a dozen birds
all morning. We did have geese skirt the dekes but really weren't in the
kill zone. Zero birds. Ah, but what a difference a day and about 5 miles
makes. Sunday we had birds on the water 10 minutes before we were
legal. They didn't wait for that steel breakfast, however that didn't stop
the buffet from being served to the 15 that did come during legal time. We
couldn't keep shells in our guns for the next 25 minutes. Awesome!

Was over as quick as it started and we didn't fill our limits but had a great morning.

2 Hunters
Went to our spot and on our way there saw some trespassers on the other end our our place. They said they had permission from the landowner (as we do) but could not produce it. After a rather heated discussion, they stayed and we hunted the other end. Obviously the other guys don't understand the principle of duck hunting. They royally screwed up a good spot and our hunting. We wound up with 4 woodies and hung it up about 9:00. More coming on the "trespassers".

Had to bust some ice to get to our spot. The water in this particular

Clear and really really, really cold and Zero wind
2 Hunters, 4 ducks
About 45 mallards came in and landed on the pond while my buddy put out the decoys (I was late). As soon as they saw him they split. 3 ducks came in about 8:40 and landed on past our decoys. One swam through the decoys and we shot at him (we scared him up first). The other 3 (dont ask me where the other one came from) got spooked by the shot and flew right into us and we took care of them. Had 2 cripples that took us about 45 minutes to find, but we got them nonetheless. Final tally: 2 mallards (drake & susie)
1 Ruddy Duck
1 Crossbreed redhead

Had some action early then they quit flying around 8:30. We didn't see nearly as many Ducks as we had seen Sunday. The weather changed dramatically around 9:30, wind picked up and shifted, didn't see a duck after that. On the way in this morning we flushed out a bunch of geese including some non-Canadians either Specks or Snows, I thought they sounded like Snows but I couldn't see them in the dark and I'm not sure what Specks sound like compared to Snows. Anyway, there are some visitors here from up north.

Duck season here is off to its best start in over 5 years as cold weather continues to push south and below average temperatures and snow flurries in the forecast for Thursday. I've had good hunting this week with a variety of species. Brisk north winds Sunday and Monday moved a lot of ducks to the area and hunting has been good. The forecast for the next several days looks ducky as cold conditions will remain through the weekend which should bring more ducks to West Tennessee.

3 Ducks (2 woodies, 1 Gadwall)
This morning didn't pay off as well as Saturday. Not sure if it was the

Tossed last decoy out at about 10am. Little bit slower than Saturday but
the birds cooperated perfectly. Every volley of birds seen dropped in for

Bad weather made for a good day to hunt. Had a group of 20 or so gads work the spread and dropped 2... a hen and drake. Had a few more groups of gadwalls and woodies work but never commit. Rain was steady and the temps were dropping and it proved to be a good combination. While picking up SEVERAL gads and woodies came right in for a peaceful night at roost. Until next weekend.

2 Hunters 8 hours
10 ducks, 4 lost (six we found were 3 Gadwalls, 1 Ringneck, 1 Wood Duck, 1 Hen Mallard)
Awesome day besides the Thunderstorms, birds were flying even at 1:30 when we had to pack it in. Had one group of 17 Mallards work for several minutes, seemed like hours and finally put down just outside our spread, poor shooting ruined the show. Should have had two limits no problem, just couldn't shoot today. Had a tough time with the cripples as well. All in all, I saw more birds today than I have in several years.

Duck hunting in Roane county TN on Dec 3 was not what I'd call the best I've seen. We did see some action but not very much. We let our 12-year olds do the shooting. They only got one greenhead but better shooting would have bagged more. I think the rain kept most hunters home, we didn't hear any shooting but ours. Only saw 3 geese, usually we see geese all day.

2 hunters, 2 hours, 3 gadwalls

Got to a spot that I scouted earlier in the week around 4 a.m. Set up the decoys and was putting the boat blind up when I spotted 2 hunters walking in on the other side of the slough. They set up almost directly across from us. I spotlighted them a couple of times, but they evidently couldn't take a hint. Couple of jerks. Started raining really hard around 9 a.m. and we packed it in. Could have shot a bunch more if not for the jerks across from us. My son got his first double. Above is a picture of Parker with his two birds.

Wildlife officer Matt Majors writes, "Throughout the weekend I, along with Greg Atchley, checked about 25 duck hunters. There were a few woodies being taken in the swamps and beaver ponds. I saw bag limits of woodies here and there. Several groups of hunters on the open water were harvesting a mixed bag of ducks including mallards, black ducks, green-winged teal, wigeon, and some gadwalls. Best I saw, 3 hunters - 12 ducks. I have seen some geese in a few places and several small bunches of bufflehead and ringnecks are around. Make sure to report wildlife violations!"

White Oak Mountain Ranger reports: Saturday Morning - Many ducks seen in State Park area, 1 drake woodie killed, ducks were shot at a plethora of times up and down the lake by more hunters than I have ever heard on the lake. Needed a boat blind where I was to be successful. Ducks constantly landed on the other side of the slough.
Sunday Afternoon - Changed to other side of the slough and so did the ducks. Fewer teal and mallards seen. Saw one White Mallard drake at 100 yards (may have been a ghost duck)with a green/black bill. Did anyone else see it? Also saw one flock of geese and six timberdoodles. Shot two woodcock. Not much to show other than the bills after the ten gauge spoke.

Opening weekend was a good one here and much better than last year. We bagged 40 ducks on Saturday and 20 on Sunday by about 11 AM on my open water blinds. A mixed bag of greenwing teal, gadwalls, pintails, shovelers, mallards and a diver or two rounded out our shoot as action was fast and furious both mornings.
An increased amount of aquatic vegetation had a lot of ducks using the river lately. And, many bottoms and fields in the area are still in need of water, which helped keep a lot of ducks on the river and improved hunting for us. Overall hunting in the west Tennessee area was good and hunters are well ahead of last year at this time as to both their harvest and optimism levels.

Jeff Archie of Paris with some of the 40-duck harvest taken on Saturday with Guide Steve McCadams at Kentucky Lake near Paris, TN. Bag consisted of greenwing teal, mallards, gadwalls, pintails, shovelers, widgeons, bufflehead, bluebill, ringneck.

3 guns - Started kind of slow, but picked up about 30 minutes after sunrise. The birds worked great and decoyed perfectly. Killed all but two that came to the spread, we gotta a little excited and didn't let them make that final turn, but WE managed to pull down the greenhead of the group. Had several big groups of geese in the area but none gave our spread a look. Not a bad start for the early Ga season.

Was not to bad for the first day. Maybe three dozen divers flying high and about once an hour we had three or four puddle ducks come into our spread. Calm weather let us hear the geese for miles. We are looking forward to this weekend, we could have gotten our limit in geese before ten am. We killed two greenheads and a gadwall. Lots of shooting up and down the river from us made us believe it was a pretty good day for quite a few duck hunters. The ducks are moving up here!

My hunting bud went by himself on the 21st and shot a limit of mallards, that's what I get for not getting out of bed. We went back on Wednesday to find the owner of the other half of this property waiting for all the woodies he shot at the evening before to return. He said the #'s were amazing, but all wood ducks. Needless to say they did not return. We did have two greenheads and a susie come in around 8 and they didn't make it out. Will try a new spot this weekend. Goodluck to the TN boys.

Not a bad start to the season. We shot 7 mallards (4 drakes - 3 hens) and one woodie, unfortunately we did not have a dog and lost a cripple. The birds moved really well the first 30 minutes and then died down. shooting was steady until about 9:30 when we decided to pack it in,and of course within a span of less than 10 minutes a dozen woodies and 4 teal landed in our hole. Never fails :(
